Society Moved to Instill Love with Empathy (SMILE); born in 1997 and based in Mumbai, steers street and slum children towards a better life with better awareness, better skills and opportunities in their journey which starts with us during their child and goes up to livelihood.
SMILE is a registered charitable organization that works not only for the upliftment of the children but also caters to the overall development of the women and eradication of loneliness for the senior citizens.
We at SMILE aim to change the course of life for the children so that they become strong, productive citizens working to build and sustain a bright future for themselves and their country.
Through our flagship project “UDAAN” we not only aim to provide good quality education to under privileged children, but also create an environment which is conducive to their overall growth and development. Along with the educational needs, we also cater to the development of the family and the health of its members.
"The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six. For that is the time when a man’s intelligence itself, his greatest implement, is being formed.” -Dr. Maria Montessori.
It is during this time that the child uses his senses to learn things. At this tender age it is very easy to mould the child’s further upbringing. These are the traits that he will carry when he grows older. . Hence we came up with the concept of a Montessori School in 2003 to cater to children in the age group of two to six years. Over a period of 16 years, this project has changed the lives of 450 children.
Through our program UTKARSH we work towards the uplifting the status of women in the society by encouraging them to take part in all social and behavioural activities to increase their presence outside the homes. For the same, we conduct monthly educational, vocational and income generation workshops, as well as expertise- training and personality-development modules for the women of Utkarsh.[This gives them moments of happiness and space from their routine life. In their words SMILE is their second home where they live, think and enjoy in their own way.]
Besides dealing with urban India, SMILE also has a project in the rural areas of Panval village in Ratnagiri district. SMILE responded to the dire need for a good quality school in the area and due to our efforts, now, Panval has a fully functional secondary school as well as a Balawadi run on the Montessori principles.
The core team of SMILE works with passion and commitment to ensure success of every project that is undertaken. We at SMILE make sure that we reach out to the unreached through our projects
