Developing state level services for early intervention and education of Children with deafblindness & multisensory impairment in Goa

‘Sense International India’ also known as Sense India, is the first and only national level organisation working with deafblind and multisensory impaired children and adults across India since last eighteen years. Deafblindness is unique category of multiple disability which is a combination of deafness and blindness in an individual. Since 95% of what we learn from our vision and hearing, the dual sensory loss leads to complex difficulties in communication, mobility and access to information. There are an estimated 500,000 children and adults with deafblindness and Multi Sensory Impairments (MSI) in our country, however just about 10% receive any form of support or intervention through the efforts of Sense India. Sense India is working in 23 States of India through a network of 56 partner organisations supporting over 65,000 deafblind people in some of the poorest areas of the country. We have currently 26 projects in different urban and rural parts across the nation providing early intervention, medical and nutritional support, aids and appliances, therapy interventions, education, and skill training to the deafblind and multi sensory impaired population of the respective state. Simultaneously, we work and enhance the capacity of likeminded disability organisations to provide services and raise awareness about the needs of deafblind people so that they can connect, participate and contribute to their communities. Recently, Sense India received "India NGO Award 2013-14" for the exemplary work in supporting and campaigning for the rights of deafblind children and adults. Sense India has been announced '2014 Top-Rated Nonprofit' by Great Nonprofits! For more information please do visit our website www.senseindia.org.in Currently there are very limited services for deafblind persons, and there are no services at all in many parts of the country. Sense India intends to initiate at least one service for deafblind persons in each state of the country, so that no deafblind person travels more than 24 hours to access need based support, including education and therapy. We also aim to involve local community to facilitate successful inclusion of deafblind persons in their community. Currently we are looking for support to help thousands of unreached and neglected deafblind people in our country. Activities range from setting up early intervention centres, special education schools; to skill development and vocational training for young deafblind adults. This proposed project is directly going to impact the lives of minimum 40 deafblind persons and their families in Goa, who would otherwise remain largely excluded from education and related progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. They will be provided needs-based services in medical, early intervention, communication, education and rehabilitation to promote their inclusion in mainstream elementary education and society at large.
